PRAYER & FASTING GUIDE

As we start 2023 together as a Foursquare global community, we intentionally fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. A prayer guide with devotional readings is provided as the foundation of your prayer time with thousands of other believers worldwide. In addition, please consider choosing to fast as the Lord leads you. See below for types of fasting.

PRAYER & FASTING Family Guide

The Family Moments prayer guide includes ways to engage even the youngest prayer warriors! You’ll find daily Scriptures to read with your kids, as well as prayer points and activities just for them that can be done any time of day: in the morning, after school, even around the dinner table, or before bed.

These shared activities can be an act of worship and a great way to help families pray together.

Let’s start 2023 connecting kids with Jesus!

Why Do We Fast?

Biblical fasting has to do with eliminating distractions for a spiritual purpose, the intentional setting aside of self to focus on God and His presence and plans for you. It also enables us to celebrate the goodness and mercy of God and prepares our hearts for the growth He desires to bring into our lives, as well as in the lives of those around us. There are many reasons to fast and a variety of ways to implement this important spiritual practice.

How Do We Fast?

It is very important to know your body, your options, and, most importantly, to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do. We encourage you to participate in 21 Days of Prayer and Fasting, a season of focused prayer as a church family. However, you may also choose to fast at other times during the year for your own spiritual development. It’s very typical to fast a single meal, a whole day, or three days or more, or choose to fast a delicacy or an activity such as social media or television. See below for more details.

Scripture References: Matthew 6:16-18, Matthew 9:14-15, Luke 18:9-14, Acts 27:33-37, Nehemiah 9:1-3

Fasting Types

Partial Fast: This fast involves abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning and afternoon, but eating the evening meal.

Selective Fast: This type of fast involves removing certain elements from your diet, such as coffee, sweets, etc. Another example is a Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweets, and bread from your diet and consume fruit and vegetables for food and water and juice for fluids.

Complete Fast: In this type of fast, you drink only liquids, typically water with light juices as an option. Typically done for 1-3 days.

Soul Fast: You might choose to stop certain activities such as social media or watching television for the duration of the fast. This is a great option if you don't have much experience fasting food, have health issues that prevent you from fasting food, or if you wish to refocus certain areas of your life. This can be done in addition to a food fast.
